Types of Canada Work Permit Visa

There are two types of Canadian work permit visas available, which are

  • Employer-specific work permits
  • Openwork permits

Employer-specific work permits

To get an employment-specific work permits applicant must meet some conditions that are

  • Name of a specific employer,
  • How long a candidate can work,
  • The location of a candidate’s work.

Besides applicants must have a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment or an offer issued by the employment from their employer.

Open Work Permit

An open work permit allows you to work for any employer in Canada, but they are issued only in specific circumstances.

Eligibility requirements for Canada Work permit Visa

Applicants intending to get a work permit visa from inside Canada should meet the following requirements

  • A valid study or work permit
  • Ensure their spouse, common-law partner or parents have a valid study or work permit.
  • Ensure they are eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) and their study permit is still valid
  • ATemporary Resident Permit (TRP) that is valid for six months or more
  • Are awaiting a decision on an application for permanent residence from inside Canada.
  • Recognized as a convention refugee or protected person by the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada.
  • They are allowed to work in Canada without a work permit you need a work permit to work in a different job.

If you’re applying from a foreign country, you have to meet the following criteria

  • Prove to an officer that you will leave Canada when your work permit expires.
  • Show that you have enough money to take care of yourself and your family members during your stay in Canada and to return home.
  • Obey the law and have no record of criminal activity
  • Not be a threat to Canada’s security
  • Be in good health and have a medical exam, if needed
  • Not have a plan to work for an employer listed with the status “ineligible” on the list of employers who failed to comply with the conditions.
  • Not plan to work for an employer who, on a regular basis, offers striptease, erotic dance, escort services, or erotic massages
  • Give the officer any other documents they ask for to prove you can enter the country.

Can I get a permanent residency from the work permit visa?

If you’re working in Canada right now and applied for permanent residence, you may able to turn your work permit into permanent residency if your work permit will expire within four months or less. That means you can continue your work even after applying for permanent residence. However, you must apply under the

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program,
  • Canadian Experience Class,
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program,
  • Provincial Nominee Program,
  • Caring for Children Class, or
  • Caring for People with High Medical Needs Class.

Besides, you must:

  • Currently, be in Canada.
  • Have valid status on a work permit that is due to expire within four months.
  • Select “Open Work Permit” as the type of work permit when you complete your work permit application.
  • Pay the work permit processing fee and the Open Work Permit Holder fee.

Documents for the application

As a foreign worker applicant, you must submit all required documents while applying for the Canada work permit visa. These documents include:

  • A photocopy of the information page of your valid passport or travel document which includes: the passport number; the issuance and expiry dates; your photo, name, date, and place of birth.
  • Two photos meeting the requirements of the Visa application photograph specifications. On the back of two photos, write your name and date of birth.
  • If you are required to provide biometric fingerprints and photos, you don’t need to include paper photos with your application.
  • Proof of current immigration status.
  • If your country or territory of residence differs from the citizenship listed on your passport, you must provide proof of legal status in your country or territory of residence.
  • Photocopy of your Marriage License/Certificate and/or proof of relationships with all spouses, children, or common-law partners
  • Proof indicating you meet the requirements of the job being offered.
  • Completed Application For Work Permit Made Outside of Canada (IMM 1295) form, if applying from outside of Canada.
  • Completed Document Checklist (IMM 5488)
  • Completed Family Information (IMM 5707) form
